Our Story
The Common Good Soup Kitchen, located in Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine, has a proud and storied history of nourishing anyone in need. Supported by local volunteers and honoring the legacy of its key founders, Larry Stettner and Bill Morrison, the kitchen serves free, nutritious meals, cultivating a sense of community and offering live music to island residents, regardless of their financial situation. Larry's vision of providing care and sustenance to the island community remains the driving force behind the kitchen today.

Year-round, the kitchen continues to be a vital lifeline for the island's winter residents, including adults, families, and children, who rely on weekly meals, food deliveries, and festive music to uplift their spirits and improve their quality of life. In the summer months, the popular "pay-what-you-want" popovers, porridge, and coffee offerings help generate the necessary funds to keep the kitchen's doors open throughout the year.

Operating on donations from individual contributions, foundations, and grants, the Common Good Soup Kitchen thrives on the generosity of the summer community. The lively atmosphere, delicious food, and live music are cherished by both guests and volunteers, creating a space filled with care, connection, and community for all who participate.
